Winterising Polaris for Arctic Conditions: Solar Panel Removal & Boat Upgrades

As we prepare Polaris for the harsh northern winter, we take down our solar panels, remove the black water tank, and install a Daewoo Mini washing machine.

In this episode, we take a deep dive—literally—into self-sufficiency aboard Polaris, testing out a brand-new piece of kit: the Blu3 Nemo tankless dive system.

We’ll show you how it helps with underwater maintenance, from cleaning the hull to replacing propeller anodes, all in the cold waters of Norway.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there! With autumn in full swing, we set off on a breathtaking 17km hike through Norway’s rugged wilderness, hoping to spot reindeer and moose before the first snow falls.

The landscape explodes in gold, red, and green, and as night falls, we are gifted with the first Northern Lights of the season.

Winter is coming, and we’ll be here above the Arctic Circle, documenting every moment aboard Polaris.

From surviving the polar night to preparing for the extreme conditions, we’ll share what it’s like to live on a sailboat in the harshest months of the year.

We set sail once again, this time joined by our son Constantin and hid girlfriend Regina, as we chase the last good weather before autumn fully takes hold in Northern Norway.

The journey starts in Tromsø, where we battle strong tidal currents while topping up our fuel tanks before heading out into the wild. Our first stop is a small floating pontoon off the island of Ryøya, one of our favourite places, and to the island of Hestøya where we drop anchor and take in the remote beauty of the Arctic landscape.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there—we hike up stunning mountain trails, try our luck at fishing in the crisp northern waters, and soak in the breathtaking scenery that makes sailing in this part of the world so special.

As the wind picks up, we venture by hire car to the rugged fishing village of Husøy, tucked away in the dramatic fjords of Senja, where life revolves around the sea.
