#14 | Exploring the Wildlife and Conservation Challenges of Canna Island

Join us on a captivating hiking expedition as we venture onto the picturesque island of Canna, nestled within the Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides. Owned by the National Trust for Scotland, Canna is renowned for its abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.

In this episode, we delve into the island’s natural wonders, observe seals and sea birds, and witness the ongoing conservation challenges it faces. As we hike through Canna’s pristine wilderness, we are immersed in the rich diversity of wildlife that calls this island home.

Though we missed the opportunity to encounter Puffins and the majestic Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles, we are still awe-struck by the beauty and tranquility of our surroundings.

However, we also shed light on one of Canna’s most pressing issues—beach pollution. We witness firsthand the devastating impact of washed-up waste, predominantly plastic, ropes, and lost fishing nets, which threaten the island’s stunning beaches. While dedicated volunteer groups periodically clean up these shores, the sheer volume of debris that continues to arrive remains overwhelming.

During our visit, we also had the pleasure of experiencing Café Canna, a local eatery serving delightful dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. Their commitment to showcasing the flavours of the region adds to the charm and authenticity of our exploration.
